Abstract

The study investigates the idea that adult non-expert subjects have of "the opposite of a transformation process", based on transformation process", based on conic stimuli (simple geometric diagrams on paper, which (simple geometric diagrams on paper, which represented a stage x transforming into a stage y). Participants were asked to draw "the opposite process(es)" to the one given. The study aimed to investigate: (a) the perceptual constraints (a) the perceptual constraints involved in the original idea of "opposite of a process" and (b) the effects of a preliminary verbal description of the stimulus produced by the subject. verbal description of the stimulus produced by the subject - probably associated with a more conscious more conscious processing. Three main findings emerged. 1) The vast majority of participants drew a single contrary. 2) The first solution that came to mind, either in presence and absence of a preliminary verbal description of the stimuli, consists in the the inversion of the stages of the initial process, without modifying its natural characteristics (i.e., y ? x). 3) Preliminary verbal processing resulted in a difference in the patterns of response patterns: when the drawings were made based only on visual processing of the stimulus, the two most frequent response patterns always involved the inversion of the order of the stages (with or without a change in the order of the of the stages (with or without modification of the f igures). On the contrary, the preliminary verbal description led us to think also of a pattern of response in which the order of the stages remained and some features of the figures were modified instead. These results raise new questions both with respect to the previous literature on the ingenuous idea of contraries, and to that on antithetical reasoning.
