The introduction to the special issue reflects on how the quality of work and working life are changing with the rise of digital technologies. We first reconstruct the current debate and plead for moving beyond polarized broad-brush, deterministic views of the effects of these technologies, on the processes of workers’ control, autonomy and subjection. Based on our own reading of the papers included in this special issue, we then discuss their conceptual and methodological contribution to the literature, identifying promising paths for future research on the complex ways in which digital technologies shape the quality of work and working life.
