Henri Michaux (1899-1984) was a Belgian poet and essayist. During his life he published several writings about experimentations with psychedelic drugs, especially mescaline. Mescaline induces the experience of turbulent space, crossed by a multitude of attractor-points which, contrary to what happens in normal perception, are insufficient to form constellations of meaning. I intend to distinguish between turbulent and whirling space. I also intend to stress the 175 analogies between the turbulent space of mescaline and the experience of “voyeuristic look” as described by early psychoanalyst Karl Abraham.

Abstract

Henri Michaux (1899-1984) was a Belgian poet and essayist. During his life he published several writings about experimentations with psychedelic drugs, especially mescaline. Mescaline induces the experience of turbulent space, crossed by a multitude of attractor-points which, contrary to what happens in normal perception, are insufficient to form constellations of meaning. I intend to distinguish between turbulent and whirling space. I also intend to stress the 175 analogies between the turbulent space of mescaline and the experience of “voyeuristic look” as described by early psychoanalyst Karl Abraham.
