Abstract

The article reflects on the interplay between categorisation processes and housing policies implemented by local authorities for Roma and Sinti in Italy. Over time, categorising these groups as 'Nomads' has led to particular housing policies that have represented and reinforced the social marginalisation into which these groups have been institutionally placed. Nevertheless, negotiation procedures and a mixture of highly different situations have recently emerged. The article presents the ethnographic case of relations between a community of Romanian Roma migrants and the municipal authorities in the city of Bari (Southern Italy).
