This afterword comments on the book’s purpose of offering as much a study of Shakespeare as of Italy by exploring various forms of Shakespearean ‘mythopoiesis’, without becoming a specimen of what Gary Taylor called “Shakesperotic.” It discusses why it has not reconstructed all the fields of discourse making up the “Shakespeare myth” in popular culture, but has investigated whether we can speak of an Italian ‘Shakespeare myth’. It also weighs some of the processes of the construction and function of discourses about Shakespeare in radical moments of transition in the Italian history comprised between the two centenaries of 1916 and 2016.
