This paper reconstructs the relationship between the poet and philosopher Friedrich Hölderlin and the physician Samuel Thomas Sömmerring. In order to do so, it addresses both the biographical contacts and the theoretical exchanges, focusing on the role of Sömmerring's work "Ueber das Organ der Seele" (1796) for Hölderlin's reflection on anthropology, nature and music.
