This paper deals with a recently rediscovered figure of late eighteenth-century German culture, the philologist and Jena professor Christian Gottfried Schütz, whose merits went beyond classical scholarship and included a surprisingly early support of Kantian philosophy. This essay aims to stress this connection in relation to Schütz’ edition of Aeschylus’ “Prometheus Bound” (1782) and its “Excursus”.

Abstract
