This paper addresses the crucial issue of European identity, focusing on both its roots and its future. In order to do this, this essay outlines a typology suggesting what European identity is, and what European identity is not. As a result, support of dialogue and openness to otherness as well as to criticism turn out to be the key points of European legacy.
