This article aims at reconstructing the constitutional development of the Etruscan communities of Faesulae and Arretium in the aftermath of the Social War. As is well known, both Faesulae and Arretium became municipia in 90/89 BCE, but were soon forced to accept contingents of colonists. The problem is that there is no certainty as to how and when these settlements were turned into properly organised colonies. A new evaluation of the relevant literary and epigraphic sources shows that the municipium Faesulanum never ceased to exist, whereas the municipium Arretinum probably became a Roman colony in the age of Caesar.

Abstract

This article aims at reconstructing the constitutional development of the Etruscan communities of Faesulae and Arretium in the aftermath of the Social War. As is well known, both Faesulae and Arretium became municipia in 90/89 BCE, but were soon forced to accept contingents of colonists. The problem is that there is no certainty as to how and when these settlements were turned into properly organised colonies. A new evaluation of the relevant literary and epigraphic sources shows that the municipium Faesulanum never ceased to exist, whereas the municipium Arretinum probably became a Roman colony in the age of Caesar.
