The paper is dealing with the origin of some metalinguistic termini from the field of the syntax, starting from their use in the grammars of the Ancient Greek. As we can show, some of them had no grammatical meaning in the Antiquity, like παράταξις, some other ones could develop a different grammatical meaning as a technicism (σύνταξις, σύνθεσις), finally, a few ones are a new creation of the metalanguage in modern times (ὑπόταξις ‘(originally) postposition’ vs. προτάξις ‘preposition’ and παράταξις ‘(originally) military row’). Finally, we could highlight how the different word classes of a verbal root assumed a particular (grammatical) meaning which was more specified only within a certain word class.

Abstract
The paper is dealing with the origin of some metalinguistic termini from the field of the syntax, starting from their use in the grammars of the Ancient Greek. As we can show, some of them had no grammatical meaning in the Antiquity, like παράταξις, some other ones could develop a different grammatical meaning as a technicism (σύνταξις, σύνθεσις), finally, a few ones are a new creation of the metalanguage in modern times (ὑπόταξις ‘(originally) postposition’ vs. προτάξις ‘preposition’ and παράταξις ‘(originally) military row’). Finally, we could highlight how the different word classes of a verbal root assumed a particular (grammatical) meaning which was more specified only within a certain word class.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
